OFF-GRID SOLAR SYSTEM
“Empowering Rural Communities with Clean Energy: Off-Grid Solar System for Sustainable Shea Nuts Processing.”
Solar-Powered Off-Grid Shea Nuts Processing Factories by TREC
Under the leadership of Dr. Muhammed Musa Gaji, the Renewable Energy Division of TREC Transition and Renewable Energy Company Limited successfully implemented solar-powered off-grid shea nuts processing factories in selected rural communities across Nigeria. This initiative was designed to address the persistent challenge of inadequate access to electricity in remote areas, where shea nuts processing had long relied on manual and primitive methods due to the absence of grid power supply.
The project features a solar photovoltaic (PV) off-grid system, a reliable and sustainable energy solution specifically tailored to meet the needs of rural food processing industries. The system captures solar energy through photovoltaic panels, converts it into electricity, and stores it in batteries for continuous use. The stored energy powers various shea nuts processing equipment, including crushers with elevators, fryers, millers, kneaders, and essential lighting points—providing a clean and efficient alternative to fossil-fuel-based power sources.
This initiative was implemented in collaboration with the African Development Bank (AfDB) through the Rural Electrification Scheme, with the primary objective of empowering underserved local communities and fostering rural economic development through renewable energy solutions.
Key Benefits of the Solar PV Off-Grid System
Reduced dependence on diesel generators and fossil fuels
Lower operational costs and improved profitability
Enhanced energy reliability and independence
Reduction in carbon emissions and environmental impact
Improved food processing capacity and product quality
By leveraging solar energy, the project has significantly improved the productivity, efficiency, and sustainability of shea nuts processing in the beneficiary communities, contributing to the broader goal of promoting a green and inclusive economy.
